Joey Alexander Music Workshop

3pm Monday July 12th

Royal Irish Academy of Music - 38 Westland Row, Dublin 2

Joey Alexander is a 14 year old Indonesian-born child prodigy jazz musician who moved with his family to New York to develop his career.

He plays a solo concert in the National Concert hall on Wednesday, July 12th

Born on the island of Bali, Joey originally learned about jazz from his dad. At age six, Joey began teaching himself to play piano using a mini electronic keyboard. His musicianship and grasp of jazz fundamentals developed at a remarkable pace, and at age eight UNESCO invited him to play solo piano for an elated Herbie Hancock during the piano great’s visit to Indonesia. At nine, Joey won the grand prize at an all-ages competition in Ukraine. By 10, he was performing at jazz festivals in both Jakarta and Copenhagen.

He has already released two albums and received three Grammy nominations. He has appeared with a string of jazz elites including Wayne Shorter and Chick Corea. He has performed at major events including the 58th Grammy Awards Ceremony and International Jazz Day in The White House.

Today he is presenting a free music workshop in the Royal Irish Academy of Music, 38 Westland Row, Dublin.

The aim is to inspire and motivate other young people to develop a love for and career in music.

He will play some of his music and talk about emigration from Indonesia to New York with his family to develop his career.
